$289 billion deficit in July 2025

The federal budget deficit totaled $1.6 trillion [actually $1.626 trillion] in the first 10 months of fiscal year 2025, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

The deficit in July 2025 was $289 billion, CBO estimates—$45 billion (or 19 percent) more than the amount recorded in July 2024.

Net Interest for July 2025 was $88 billion (847 - 759).

Spending for Social Security benefits rose by $102 billion (or 8 percent), (from $1,201 billion YTD in 2024 compared to $1,303 billion YTD in 2025).  Social Security accounts for 21.8% of all federal spending. 

The Federal Reserve had a deficit of $4.4 billion for the month (as of 7/30/25) for a cumulative deficit of $238.1 billion.
