Pope Pius II in 1459

Pope Pius II (1405-1464) was the predecessor of Pope Paul II, and he wrote an autobiography in Latin called the Commentaries.  In this document I found a date in Latin:
Sic res gestae sunt ad Calendas usque Nouembris, anno salutis Millesimo quadringentesimo quinquagesimo nono.

Which translated is: So far achievements are the first of November, in the year one thousand four hundred and fifty-nine.

So that is very cool. We have a date (November 1, 1459) written in Latin, written shortly after the time when it happened, and we have a scan of the book and we know who wrote it.

Do we have anything earlier?  I'm sure there is some historian out there who has asked the same questions, but who?  How can we trust history?
